Buckeye Music Magzine's November Artist of the Month
The city of Cincinnati is known for many things like the Cincinnati Reds, Cincinnati Chili, and Cincinnati Trashgrass. In case you’re not familiar with the last one, Trashgrass describes the music made famous by Buckeye Music Magazine’s November Artist of the Month the Rumpke Mountain Boys. Trashgrass is a blend of Bluegrass and Jamgrass done Rumpke style. Hailing from the Queen City, the RMB’s have been considered one of the hottest local bands in the area for nearly a decade. The band has been the winner of the Cincinnati Entertainment Awards Best Bluegrass Band for the past 7 years and with the release of their new CD called what else, “Trashgrass” coming out November 2, the Rumpke Mountain Boys are poised for a regional tour that begins right here in the Tri-State. The tour begins with several CD Release Parties first of which will be at the Inner Circle Entertainment Center (formerly Annie’s) in Cincinnati November 2.
By now everyone knows that I grew up on Rock and Heavy Metal so I have to admit that Bluegrass was never really on my radar; that is until I heard Rumpke for the first time. Chubby kept telling me about this band from Cincy who were playing a different kind of Bluegrass and when I finally heard the band live I was blown away and have been a fan ever since. Rumpke opened up an entirely new world for me musically and I am forever grateful for that. The RMB’s are always a favorite on the summer festival scene and this year saw the band playing at some of the years biggest like All Good, Dark Star Jubilee, and the Appalachian Uprising in addition to hosting their own festival called Snugglefest. The release of Trashgrass is the second for the band and the first with Bassist JD Westmoreland. Together with band mates Jason Wolf (Banjo, Vocals), Ben Gourley (Mandolin, Vocals) and Adam Copeland (Guitar, Vocals) the Rumpke Mountain Boys have hammered out one of the most anticipated CD’s of the year.

While the new CD is generating quite a buzz, the live shows that are scheduled to promote the album are what I’m most excited about. When you see a Rumpke show you can bet your ass that the guys are gonna pull out all the stops playing plenty of originals from the new CD as well as some covers that are sure to surprise. I remember the first time I heard the band do Pink Floyds “Hey You,” It was one of the best versions I have ever heard; it was bad ass! You never know what you might hear as the band has been known to cover songs from the Grateful Dead to Tom Wait and everything in between. Rumpke has been known to play from sunset to sunrise and never play the same tune twice and their late night jams at Disc-O-Pizza during festy season are becoming legendary. We can’t think of a band more deserving of Buckeye Music Magazine’s Artist of the Month than Ohio’s own Rumpke Mountain Boys. Be sure to catch Rumkpe at one of the CD release parties and grab your copy of Thrashgrass TODAY!
